SUMMARY:Chakri Memorial Day
DESCRIPTION:Thailand observes Chakri Memorial Day as a public holiday on April 6th every year. Officially known as “King Buddha Yodfa Chulaloke the Great Day and Chakri Dynasty Memorial Day\,” this holiday commemorates the establishment of the Chakri Dynasty by King Rama I in 1782\, over two centuries ago. One of King Rama’s first decrees was to make Krung Thep (“City of Angels\,” also known as Bangkok) the capital of Siam. \nChakri Memorial Day not only commemorates the coronation and contributions of King Rama I but all the kings of the Chakri Dynasty\, culminating in His Majesty King Vajiralongkorn (Rama X)\, the current reigning monarch. \nOn this national public holiday\, government offices\, banks\, and schools are closed\, though other businesses may remain open and are unaffected by the celebrations. Chakri Memorial Day is always held on April 6th\, just a week before the annual Songkran Festival (Traditional Thai New Year).

SUMMARY:Coronation Day
DESCRIPTION:Many countries have days that celebrate or commemorate the head of state. For Thailand\, the Coronation Day\, or Wan Chatra Mongkol\, is an auspicious occasion to celebrate the coronation anniversary of the Thai monarch. Rituals are performed on the royal regalia which symbolizes kingship.  In the current reign of King Rama X\, Coronation Day marks the anniversary of His Majesty’s coronation on 4 May 2019. \nThe rituals performed on Coronation Day developed over time. In the reign of King Rama IV\, the King\, in his private event\, made merit to celebrate the royal umbrella or chatra (ฉัตร)\, the Thai symbol of kingship. As a result\, Coronation Day in Thai is called Wan Chatra Mongkol (วันฉัตรมงคล) meaning “Auspicious Day of the Royal Umbrella.” \nThe merit-making ceremony for Coronation Day rituals was held privately in the Grand Palace until King V turned it into a state event. In his reign\, Coronation Day’s ceremony included the conferral of Order of Chula Chao Klao\, firing of gun salute\, paying homage to the late kings\, and merit-making in celebration of the Royal Regalia. In the reign of King Vajiravudh (Rama VI)\, merit-making for the late kings was added to list of rituals. Nowadays\, in the current reign of King Vajiralongkorn (Rama X)\, Coronation Day celebrations span three days\, with the May 4 announced as a public holiday. \n  \n  \n

By October 2016\, international media had picked up on the rumours and declared her as the future consort. \nThe announcement of the new holiday was made by Nattaporn Jatusripitak\, spokesperson for the deputy prime minister in charge of economic affairs. The proposal from the Secretariat of the Cabinet for the Cabinet’s declaration was made in response to a royal command from His Majesty the King. \nAcross Thailand\, buildings are decorated to honour their queen\, with the most splendid are in Bangkok\, where many buildings and streets are festooned with coloured lights\, flowers\, and portraits of the queen. People are encouraged to wear purple (The Queen’s ‘colour’) to honour her and buildings in Bangkok are decorated with yellow (the colour of the King) and purple in celebration.

SUMMARY:Loy Krathong Festival 2025
DESCRIPTION:Loy Krathong is a Thai festival celebrated annually throughout Thailand and in nearby countries with significant South Western Thai cultures (Laos\, Shan\, Mon\, Tanintharyi\, Kelantan\, Kedah\, and Xishuangbanna). The name could be translated as “to float ritual vessel or lamp\,” and comes from the tradition of making Krathong or buoyant\, decorated baskets\, which are then floated on a river. Many Thais use the Krathong to thank the Goddess of Water and River\, Goddess Khongkha or to worship the Holy Buddha’s hair pagoda in heaven in Buddhist beliefs. This festival traces its origin back to India. \nLoy Krathong takes place on the evening of the full moon of the 12th month in the traditional Thai lunar calendar\, so the exact date of the festival changes every year. In the Western calendar this usually falls in the month of November. In Chiang Mai\, the festival lasts three days. \nYi Peng is taking place at the same time\, with it’s epic lantern festivals. \nChiang Mai Tips: \n\nNo need to buy tickets or pay. From Tha Phae Gate square along Tha Phae Road\, down to the Ping River are all free festivities.\nParade along Tha Phae Road is free.\nCan purchase Lanterns from vendors along the way.\nCan purchase Krathong’s and release in the river across the bridge.\nThe old city hotels fill up\, so book as soon as possible.\n\n  \n \nThe Best Places To Experience Loy Krathong & Yi Peng [2025]

SUMMARY:Yi Peng Lantern Festival 2025
DESCRIPTION:Loy Krathong coincides with the Lanna (northern Thai) festival known as the Yi Peng Lantern Festival. Yi means ‘two’ and peng means a ‘full moon day’. Yi Peng refers to the full moon day in the second month according to the Lanna lunar calendar (the twelfth month of the Thai lunar calendar). The festival is meant as a time to make merit. \nSwarms of sky lanterns (Thai: โคมลอย; RTGS: khom loi)\, literally: ‘floating lanterns’\, are launched into the air. Khom loi are made from a thin fabric\, such as rice paper\, stretched over a bamboo or wire frame\, to which a candle or fuel cell is attached. When the fuel cell is lit\, the resulting hot air is trapped inside the lantern and creates enough lift for the khom loi to float into the sky. During the festival\, some people also decorate their houses\, gardens\, and temples with khom fai (Thai: โคมไฟ)\, intricately shaped paper lanterns which take on different forms.

SUMMARY:Asahna Bucha Day
DESCRIPTION:It marks the day when the Buddha delivered his first sermon (Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta) to his five disciples\, which led to The first Buddhist monk\, the completion of the Triple Gem: Buddha\, Dhamma (teachings)\, and Sangha (monastic community). \n \nObserved on the full moon of the 8th lunar month\, usually in July\, and is a National Holiday. \nOn Asahna Bucha Day\, most Thai Buddhists will visit their local wat (temple) to make merit. One way of doing this is by donating candles to the temple. This ancient tradition dates back long before the advent of electricity when monks living in the temple relied on candlelight to see them through the darker days of the rainy season. The most famous of the candle festivals is held in the north-east city of Ubon Ratchathani.

SUMMARY:Loy Krathong Festival 2026
From Tha Phae Gate square along Tha Phae Road\, down to the Ping River are all free festivities.\nParade along Tha Phae Road is free.\nCan purchase Lanterns from vendors along the way.\nCan purchase Krathong’s and release in the river across the bridge.\nThe old city hotels fill up\, so book as soon as possible.\n\n\n \n

SUMMARY:Yi Peng Festival 2026
DESCRIPTION:Loy Krathong coincides with the Lanna (northern Thai) festival known as Yi Peng. \n
