If June 3rd falls on a weekend\, the holiday will be observed on the following Monday. \nThis holiday marks the birthday of the current queen of Thailand\, Queen Suthida. \nThe birthday of Queen Dowager Sirikit will also remain a holiday as National Mother’s Day on August 12th. \nHis Majesty the King named General Suthida Vajiralongkorn na Ayudhya the new queen on May 1st 2019 and conferred upon Queen Suthida the formal title of Her Majesty the Queen Suthida Bajrasudhabimalalakshana on May 4th 2019. \nThe Queen was born on June 3rd 1979 in Hat Yai\, Songkla\, Thailand\, to Kham and Jangheang Tidjai. Since 2010 Suthida had been serving in the Ratchawanlop Guards\, a unit of bodyguards protecting the then-Crown Prince\, since 2013\, according to Thai media. \nAfter Vajiralongkorn’s divorce from the former Princess Srirasmi\, Suthida was linked to the future king romantically. By October 2016\, international media had picked up on the rumours and declared her as the future consort. \nThe announcement of the new holiday was made by Nattaporn Jatusripitak\, spokesperson for the deputy prime minister in charge of economic affairs. The proposal from the Secretariat of the Cabinet for the Cabinet’s declaration was made in response to a royal command from His Majesty the King. \nAcross Thailand\, buildings are decorated to honour their queen\, with the most splendid are in Bangkok\, where many buildings and streets are festooned with coloured lights\, flowers\, and portraits of the queen. People are encouraged to wear purple (The Queen’s ‘colour’) to honour her and buildings in Bangkok are decorated with yellow (the colour of the King) and purple in celebration.

SUMMARY:Coronation Day
DESCRIPTION:Many countries have days that celebrate or commemorate the head of state. For Thailand\, the Coronation Day\, or Wan Chatra Mongkol\, is an auspicious occasion to celebrate the coronation anniversary of the Thai monarch. Rituals are performed on the royal regalia which symbolizes kingship.  In the current reign of King Rama X\, Coronation Day marks the anniversary of His Majesty’s coronation on 4 May 2019. \nThe rituals performed on Coronation Day developed over time. In the reign of King Rama IV\, the King\, in his private event\, made merit to celebrate the royal umbrella or chatra (ฉัตร)\, the Thai symbol of kingship. As a result\, Coronation Day in Thai is called Wan Chatra Mongkol (วันฉัตรมงคล) meaning “Auspicious Day of the Royal Umbrella.” \nThe merit-making ceremony for Coronation Day rituals was held privately in the Grand Palace until King V turned it into a state event. In his reign\, Coronation Day’s ceremony included the conferral of Order of Chula Chao Klao\, firing of gun salute\, paying homage to the late kings\, and merit-making in celebration of the Royal Regalia. In the reign of King Vajiravudh (Rama VI)\, merit-making for the late kings was added to list of rituals. Nowadays\, in the current reign of King Vajiralongkorn (Rama X)\, Coronation Day celebrations span three days\, with the May 4 announced as a public holiday. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Chakri Memorial Day
DESCRIPTION:Thailand observes Chakri Memorial Day as a public holiday on April 6th every year. Officially known as “King Buddha Yodfa Chulaloke the Great Day and Chakri Dynasty Memorial Day\,” this holiday commemorates the establishment of the Chakri Dynasty by King Rama I in 1782\, over two centuries ago. One of King Rama’s first decrees was to make Krung Thep (“City of Angels\,” also known as Bangkok) the capital of Siam. \nChakri Memorial Day not only commemorates the coronation and contributions of King Rama I but all the kings of the Chakri Dynasty\, culminating in His Majesty King Vajiralongkorn (Rama X)\, the current reigning monarch. \nOn this national public holiday\, government offices\, banks\, and schools are closed\, though other businesses may remain open and are unaffected by the celebrations. Chakri Memorial Day is always held on April 6th\, just a week before the annual Songkran Festival (Traditional Thai New Year).
