Phuket Vegetarian Festival 2026

October 10 - October 18

Experience a festival like not other in Phuket Thailand. The Phuket Vegetarian Festival is one of Thailand’s most famous cultural and religious celebrations — a deeply spiritual event with roots in the Chinese-Thai community.

The festival is a nine-day Taoist celebration dedicated to the Nine Emperor Gods, traditionally observed during the ninth lunar month of the Chinese calendar. Locals believe that eating strictly vegetarian and following a set of purification rules cleanses both body and spirit, brings merit, and wards off bad luck.

Participants and many visitors dress in all white as a symbol of purity, avoid meat, alcohol, and other indulgences, and take part in rituals ranging from solemn processions to dramatic feats of spiritual devotion.

Key Traditions & Rituals

  • Strict vegetarian diet (“jay” / vegan food) with yellow flags indicating vegetarian food stalls across the island.

  • Local rituals and ceremonies at Chinese shrines like Jui Tui Shrine, Bang Neow Shrine, and Sui Boon Tong Shrine.

  • Ma Song mediums (devotees believed to be possessed by gods) perform intense acts such as fire-walking, climbing ladders of blades, and body piercing with skewers, swords, and other objects in trance-like states — symbolic acts thought to absorb the community’s misfortunes.

  • Processions and firecracker-filled street parades wind through Phuket Town daily.

Despite the “vegetarian” name, the festival is more about spiritual purity than food alone. That said, thousands of stalls and restaurants don yellow “เจ” (jay) flags indicating they’re serving strictly vegetarian or vegan Thai and Chinese dishes — typically excluding all animal products and strong pungent ingredients like garlic and onions.

🎉 Visitor Tips

  • Dress respectfully in white if participating or watching rituals.

  • Be prepared for crowds, noise (firecrackers), and intense ceremonies.

  • Best places to watch: Phuket Town, near major Chinese shrines.
